If people always followed their Id then there wouldn’t be anything to stop people stealing to fulfill their desire for objects or food or drink. The other parts of the mind attempt to control the Id, this allows people to function in society without always giving in to their desires. This means that we are not aware of our Id working, it doesn’t enter our conscious thought even though it is the driving force of human actions. Luckily, for society and individuals in general the Id lies in the unconscious part of the brain. In the case of a murder the person may be overcome by their desire to fulfill the craving to hurt someone. Other examples of an Id are when someone murders out of passion. The drives for pleasure that the Id expresses is called “the Pleasure Principle”, which Freud says is the driving force of the human mind. In this case Emer was acting based on her Id’s desires, and that desire was the pleasure of eating. Like Emer grabbing the food off the table beside her without thinking about it. The Id is claimed to be the part of the human mind that is driven for pleasure. To explain this clearly we will start with the Id. This theory was proposed in an essay “Beyond the Pleasure Principle” written by Freud in 1920 and then refined in another essay “The ego and the Id” in 1923. In the next few paragraphs I’ll explain how Freud believed that the human mind is split into three main categories, one of primal desire, one of morality and one that attempts to make sense of the world and of itself. This short fiction is intended to explain Sigmund Freud’s well respected theory of the Id, the Ego and the Super-ego. I think I get caught up in the thrill of pleasure too much sometimes. If I owned a small business I’d probably really appreciate a customer being honest. I doubt they’re millionaires or anything from just running a pub.Įmer: Yeah actually, you’re right about that. This place is run by a family, it’d be different if we were at a corporate restaurant like Pizza hut. Marc: Oh, we could get some chips of our own with that.Įmer: Or more drink! They’d never notice and we’re paying them enough as it is. Do you know what else? They didn’t charge us for a drink, what’ll we do with the money? Like I’d always be thinking about what if the waiter saw me or the man comes back and confronts me.Įmer: He won’t know. Marc: Maybe I’m just too nervous or something. It’s a bit weird and he’s not finished with it.Įmer: It was just a chip, he won’t notice. Marc: I can’t believe you did that! That’s sick.Įmer: Ha…I didn’t even think about it, I just saw them and wanted it….so I took them. A man has just left the table beside them to go to the toilet and Emer spontaneously has taken the food off the plate of the departed couple. In this scene Emer and Marc are sitting in a pub and drinking.
